Take this as an article of warning. You must research what keywords you are targeting or you may be wasting your time. This sounds so simple, but I have had several customers have a problem with this. I got an email from a customer one day that raved about how my education got her to the top of Google, but she couldn't figure out why there was no traffic.
There are a bunch of things out there that people are not searching for. If you are ranking for these words, even in the number one position you may not be in the best situation. Let me give you an example. I rank number one for almost all of my website names. That does not bring me a lot of traffic, only on a few of my better known website are people actually searching for the name.
Go out and research your keywords to make sure that you are actually going to target something that people are searching for. You can use a tool as simple as the Google keyword tool. The more that you research indivdual keywords that people are searching for the more of a chance you have of actually drawing traffic from ranking well. You must do your research though or you will lose out.
I go right to the Google AdWords tool before I even design a website. I look for words that have 30-100 thousand searches per month. The reason I pick these numbers is because that gives you an opportunity at 1000 visits per day. I figure if I can convert about 5% on 1000 visits per day then I am in excellent shape financially. Especially if all the visits are free from search engines.
SEO is not rocket science, but before you even start you better find a keyword that you can actually rank for that will draw traffic. It really does no good to rank for a word that does not bring any traffic to your site. Ranking number one for a high traffic keyword is the ultimate, but you would rather rank for a high traffic keyword in a postion other than number one for a word that nobody searches for.
