Many years ago it was not uncommon to have various generations of a family living together in one home. In some cultures that may still be the norm but is certainly not the norm in America. With the recession and the troubled economy, a lot of families are now choosing to live under one roof with their parents for financial reasons and are finding the added benefits in doing so. This article will discuss how to renovate your existing home to make a total apartment for your aging parent or parents including a smaller sized kitchen, a physically challenged accessible bathroom with a walk in bathtub or walk in bathtubs, and a relaxing family room and bedroom.
The first decision to make in crating an apartment in your house for the older generation is where would the best location be for that living space. If your parent is physically strong and has no problem navigating stairs then perhaps changing your current basement into an apartment would be the most cost effective solution. If your parent is moving in with you because they can not physically make it independently anymore then an apartment next to the main level may be the smarter idea. This may be done in a garage conversion also to keep the costs down .
Whether you decide to change your basement or your garage into an apartment both would be inexpensive ways to use the existing space that already exists rather than having to completely add on to the home using all new construction. The key to the renovation is to using smaller scaled designs like apartment scaled appliances for a little kitchenette so they do not feel like they have to eat with the whole family at each meal if they do not wish to. In order to make the wisest use of your space for the renovation a designer may be a wise person to hire to help you make some great decisions that will make the best use of the space .
Another thing to consider is if your parent is going to live with you for the short term until their financial situation gets better or if this is for the rest of their life. If it is for a long time you may want to install things that will be helpful to them as they age and become more dependent. The bathrooms are a huge item to think about and having handrails near the toilet and walk in bathtub with a seat are great items to install in addition to putting in a help button in the bathroom and the living room too.
Having your aging parent live with you can end up being a wonderful time period for your family. You will get to spend their last years close to them and taking care of them as they took care of you when you were a child. They may also be more involved with their grandchildren's daily lives also which is great for both of the generations .
