Are you ready to be a father? The first year is always the toughest. It's incredibly challenging; but the rewards are well worth it. So, just what does it take to be the best dad you can be? If you're worried about navigating the ins and outs of fatherhood, don't. It may be hard at first, but a little love and care go a long way.

There are some very practical things you should know about becoming a father. Babies aren't all adorable smiles and hugs. They do tend to cry. Some cry a lot. Many babies will bawl endlessly for seemingly no reason whatsoever. They'll cry when you try to change their diapers. They'll tear up when you try to feed them their creamed spinach.

This may seem obvious, but babies cry and they may cry for all sorts of reasons and they may not stop. But don't be afraid. Babies are tough; you can hold them and cradle them. Try to comfort them, just make sure to hold them and gently support the head. Each baby is different, which means each baby likes different things. There are no universal rules that will apply to each and every baby.

Don't get too caught up in any one nugget of wisdom about the things you should or shouldn't be doing. Babies are people with basic human needs and instincts; chances are if you're hot and bored, they will be too.

To be a great father means you'll need to pitch in; but more importantly, it means you'll have to give a lot of love. If you're worried about how you're going to make it all hold together, remember that you are not alone. You can become a great father-it just takes a little effort and some practice.

The very first year, those initial starting out months will no doubt be the most difficult you'll encounter. This is when everything is still new and it takes getting used to for both you and your partner. Remember that both of you are in this together. Even though the mother is usually the one to tend to things like feeding and even cleaning, both of you need to team up and work together.

The key to making it work is team work. Truly, you and your partner have to work as a team and remember that new moms go through a lot-giving birth isn't an easy process. It's physically and emotionally demanding, so don't simply hand off the baby every time he or she starts crying and you can't figure out what to do.

During the first days, no doubt both you and your partner will be overwhelmed. It's hard to figure out what you're supposed to be doing. It's important to get to know the basics-how to change diapers, how to feed and bathe your child, how to recognize potential health problems, and how to be supportive, rather than stressed.

Just go for it. Get involved. Make mistakes and learn from them.

Carry your child. Talk to him (or her). Play with him. The more time you spend with your child, the more natural you'll feel as a parent.
