You do not want to spend all your time and energy starting a forum only to have it go terribly wrong. Things may not always go how you want them to but do not let that get you down. I want to share a few tips with you on how to start a forum. I hope these tips make things easier for you and hopefully help you become a little more hopeful.
First of all it is important to be persistent. This is the best tip I can give you. You will need to learn patience; this is not a project that will happen overnight. The longer a forum or even a website is up the more traffic it will gain. It will take time to build traffic, so the longer your forum is online the better your chances will be.
You should be interested in the topic you pick for your forum. If you are not interested in the subject matter you are writing then the content for your forum will be harder to come by. You will probably become quite bored will writing about an uninteresting subject. You will also not want to be online very long if you are working on something boring.
Next you will want to find some people, like maybe family, or friends who share this interest with you. If you can get a few of your friends or relatives to talk on your forum a few times a day that will help to create content. This will greatly improve your chances of having other people check out your forum. Without a dedicated group of uses, the site will never grow.
When you finally do get a little group of users actively leaving content on your forum, you should then have them get their friends to check out your forum. You don't want to start sending spam of your URL to other blogs and websites just yet. When you have around 40 or so members then you can start the advertising of your forum. If you do it too soon you could become over run with members.
New comers want to see a tight community. A community that seem friendly and close, and who all get along together. They are more likely to return and possibly bring friends with them. When you do finally have a strong community, you should start sharing the URL with other sites. You can post on blogs, and forums and you are bound to find a few more users.
Do not get over whelmed when you start out. You do not want to post to many threads talking. Users can tell if you are just talking to yourself. Do not have a lot of forums with no one on them. If there are no member in your forums the people looking into them will just assume your site is not very active. Having just a small community one a couple of forums is the best way to go about it.
Forum starting is hard work and takes time but it will usually pay off. Just remember you are doing this to have fun not to become a millionaire. Your users will want a fun, friendly place to have discussions. So make sure that your goal is to give your users what they want.
