Computers are getting smaller and smaller. The new notebooks are a great tool, and they are getting even smaller. An important secret to the smaller size is the touch screen. With the invention of multi touch technology, the keyboard does not have keys any more. It can metamorphose into a touch screen. Yes, this little notebook has a full QWERTY keyboard without keys. And its nine-inch size lets you slip it into your pocket for easy access wherever you can find Wi-Fi. No need to schlep a bulky backpack or computer bag (man purse).
Picture yourself being able to get online all over town. You go into Starbucks, open up your notebook, and voila. The world is yours. Check your RSS feeds to read what your favorite bloggers have to say today while you sip your designer coffee and munch a little something sweet. No need to wrestle with a limp newspaper. It's all on the tiny screen of your notebook. Do you agree or disagree with your favorite writers? Add your comments. Even better, become a blogger yourself. What do you care that no one may read it? It is still out there and, who can say? Maybe someone somewhere will stumble across it in their voyage through cyberspace.
Then, when you are finished with the blogs, you can flip over to Facebook. So much valuable time can be wasted on Facebook. What are your friends doing today? Just hope it isn't cluttered up with messages such as "Woke up with a headache. Have to go to work now." Just as dull is something similar to "It is 85* already and going to be a hot one." Don't say anything this boring. Say something unexpected. One of my favorites of all time was the entry by the mother of twin toddlers who said she overheard one say to the other during naptime, "Close your eyes and dance like a monkey." Looking for more ways to waste time? Facebook has innumerable games and quizzes to amuse you.
Maybe you're not in Starbucks to waste time. Good for you. You can be productive while you are there. Check your email. Keep in touch with what's going on in the office and with your customers. You can most likely even remote into your desktop in your cubicle and do some actual work. The notebook's screen is small, but you can manage. The resolution these days is amazing. It is even possible to read entire web pages on a phone. If you are a freelance writer or translator, you can easily do this type of work on a notebook. You don't even need Wi-Fi until it's time to turn in your project. You want to do a little bit of work in a public Wi-Fi zone because you are probably going stircrazy staring at your same four walls with no company but the cat. But don't get sucked into too much people watching or, worse, get involved in a conversation. Keep your mind on your work.
The world is better for the fact that computers are getting smaller but more powerful. Just don't waste too much of your valuable time.
