The Concept Of Advertising And Use Of Signage

Advertisement is a method adopted for promotion of various products along with the services provided, and the sale offers. It serves as a means of communication. It is a common idea that the phenomena of advertisement originated with the newspaper in the seventeenth century. At first, it was considered for describing the product as well as its price range. However, in the late nineteenth century the technological advancements made possible the addition of colours to the advertisements in order to make it more appealing.

At the end of the nineteenth century, advertising developed quite well, leading to an individual field of work. Several advertising agencies established which helped the manufacturers to carry on with manufacturing, without worrying about the promotion of their products. Thus, advertising emerged as a separate business field.

Advertising got major boost during the First World War. As all governments used advertising as a mean of propaganda, it also had its affects on the entrepreneurs; it accelerated the desire to create need in the consumer. Thus, this desire has dominated the advertising business since 1920s.

With the introduction of mass media, advertisers used radio and cinema as a means to transmit commercial messages; however, it was effective for a short period of time. The Great Depression of 1930s and Second World War depleted the need of advertising because people did not have enough money to indulge in to such things. This situation lasted till the 1950s.

With the advent of television sets in 1950s, it became a part of every home. Advertising was the main aspect of the transmissions of television. Later on, the television turned out to be the most needed item of every home. The advertisements indulged people in to the world of imagination. At first, advertisements appeared in the form of complete shows, but later on, the executive of NBC, Sylvester Weaver, promoted advertisements in the form of commercial breaks between the programmes. The same tradition is going on to date.

In comparison with advertising as explained above, signage is a static and more economical means of conveying information. Displaying information through any kind of visual graphics is called signage. There are various types of signage, that is, oils stock signage, street signage, neon signage, modular signage, custom-made signage, modular curved frame technology, light-emitting diodes technology and architectural signage.

The signs that are being used in advertising are usually statutory signage. They are the images that convey a certain message. These signage pictograms have explicit code of colour, shape and size, which vary according to category and place. Signage should be prominent and easy to understand. The image used in signage should be in a pure form so that it can be understood even without any text. A properly developed sign can increase the chances of success in a business. Signage is mostly used to represent a set of rules that should be followed. Usually, the size of a certain sign varies in different parts of the world. Rectangular signs convey information to the Audience; like public information signs, fire equipment signs, etc. Circular signs are mandatory in the sense that they convey the instructions that should not be ignored and must be followed. Triangular signs are used as a warning. They indicate danger, and tell the Audience to be careful and alert.
