The difference between small and big businesses:
The answer is not a simple one, for there are many. However, this article takes an unusual approach not commonly talked about. We will discuss a different kind of difference between the two.
Small business owners are an integral part of the system. Their strategy is to work as much as possible and hire out what they cannot do, either because they lack the skills or the time. In their mind, the more they work and the less they hire out, the more money is left at the end of the day for them.
Big business owners are not an integral part of the system. Their strategy is to work as little as possible and hire out as much possible, even if they have the time or skills to do that work. In their mind, the less they work and the more they hire out, the more their income comes in without their effort.
These both are solid approaches, and they are both good for different people. However, most people who are good for the big business approach end up unwillingly getting stuck in small business, because they do not understand that they are doing the small business approach.
For example, if you are a professional graphics designer, and you are happiest when you are making pictures, then you should do the small business approach.
If you are seeking money or free time, then you should take the route of big business; small business would make you miserable and discouraged.
The route of small business leads to lots of work. You are seeking more work, because you want to save money, remember? Well, your talents become more widely recognized and sought after, so, in the end, you end up with lots of work. You got what you wished for.
After many years of the big business approach, your business will be running by itself, and there is no work for you to do anymore, since your business takes care of it. Thus, you have lots of free time.

you get what you seek.
If you are looking for work, you will find more than you could ever possibly deal with.
If you are seeking free time, you will also find more than you could ever imagine.
Neither approach is inherently superior to the other, but you have to know what it is that you want. If your work makes you happy, then stick with small business and work away. If you want money and free time, start hiring out as much as possible, even though it puts less money in your pocket at the end of the day for now. Someday, you will have that free time and money that you seek.
