If you're keen to experience an exotic culture but don't fancy spending days cooped up in a plane then Marrakech could be the perfect destination for you. Morocco's cultural centre is architecturally magnificent and socially fascinating ? and best of all, it's only a three-and-a-half hour flight from the UK.

If you're visiting the city, then start your exploration at Djemaa el-Fna Square. A colourful collection of fortune tellers, snake charmers and fire-eaters mingle their way among the thronging crowd, giving a glimpse into an alien but fascinating culture.

Djemaa el-Fna is also a great base for exploring the rest of the city. Famous landmarks such as the fountains of Echrab ou Chouf, the Saadien Tombs and El Badii Palace are all nearby, while the wealth of sandstone buildings make it clear why Marrakech has earned the nickname 'The Red City'.

Of these ochre buildings, the largest and most impressive is undoubtedly the Koutoubia Mosque. Known as the 'booksellers mosque' because of the book trading bazaar that used to be located nearby, it is well worth a visit. Tourists are asked to cover up and show respect to the mosque's traditions.

If the Koutoubia Mosque gives you a taste for sight-seeing, you next stop should be the Dar Si Said Museum. It is located within an elegant palace on the Riad Ezzitoun El Jadid, and boasts an amazing collection of cultural and historical artefacts. Explore the Moorish tradition, see ancient tools from the Sahara and valuable Moorish furniture, and enjoy a range of Berbern art.

If you prefer the great outdoors over architectural splendor then make sure you don't miss the Majorelle Gardens. Designed in 1924 by the celebrated French artist Jacques Majorelle, they combine botanical beauty with historical interest ? it was here that Yves Saint-Laurent's ashes were scattered after his death.

When sight-seeing is beginning to pall, make your way to one of Marrakech's bustling souks. Selling everything from souvenirs to blacksmith's iron and magic spells, these are great places to pick up bargain goods. Just make sure that you learn the art of haggling before your visit.

Marrakech is becomingly increasingly popular as a tourist destination, and boasts a growing number of well-equipped hotels. Try the Hotel Es Saadi or the Hotel Ibis Moussafir for enjoyable luxury.
