The stereotypical image of Dubai is one that features incredible buildings, spectacular opulence and some of the best shopping on the planet. All too often our stereotypes of a certain place are wrong, but when it comes to Dubai, the image is right on the mark.
The only way to get a real feel for the splendour of Dubai is to walk through the city centre. The buildings compete for attention all around you and each is more remarkable than the last. Without a doubt, however, the Burj Khalifa has stolen the title as jewel in the crown of Dubai's architecture. The Khalifa is the tallest building in the world by some margin and has to be seen to be believed.
The spectacle continues down on the waterfront. Dubai's government takes incredibly good care of its coastline and the beaches are immaculate. Make sure you take the opportunity to have a look at the Burj Al-Arab, the only Seven-Star Hotel in the world. It's also worthwhile taking a look at the Palm and the World island collections if you can get a boat out and travel among them.
Aside from the architecture Dubai is probably most famous for its shopping. Just about everywhere you turn in the city there is a shopping mall, usually found within another amazing building. If you're going on holiday on Dubai, it's a good idea to make sure that you have some spare capacity in your suitcases.
Dubai's incredible shopping doesn't end with modern retail chains. Dubai has been a trade centre for hundreds of years and ship captains used to moor in Dubai and then strike deals for their wares with local traders. The location for these trades, the 'souks,' remain busy centres of trade today, but beware, haggling is part of the shopping process, so don't be put off by what might seem like high prices.
Despite having a rather austere reputation, Dubai is listed as one of the best places to party in the world. Pubs and clubs are generally only found inside the hotels, but it's possible to have an amazing night without stepping outside at all.
Even though it is surrounded by desert, Dubai has a lot to offer when it comes to wildlife. A desert safari will take you across the dunes and allow you to get up close and personal to some truly rare and exotic wildlife, as well as giving you the opportunity to visit a genuine desert oasis. Definitely not to be missed.
In spite of high profile financial problems, Dubai is still a wonderful place to visit and with flights to the emirate cheaper than ever, it's a great time to head out there. If you fancy a holiday which has sun, sea, and sand why not head out to Dubai?
