Over the past fifty years, Dubai has gone from being a small and rather non-descript city in the middle of an unfriendly desert to one of the world's most luxurious and desirable tourist destinations.

It's become a byword for opulence, extravagance and even excess ? but there's more to Dubai than simple consumerism. Aside from the world-class malls, there are plenty of reasons why you should make the city your next holiday spot.

The beaches: Since temperatures in the UEA can rise to a sweltering 47 degrees centigrade during the summer, it's lucky that there are plenty of places to cool off. Dubai lies on the Gulf coast, and is framed by mile upon mile of beautiful white sand. Many of the best beaches belong to the luxury hotels, but there's a great public beach at Mamzar Park with plenty of facilities nearby.

The traditional side: Most of the development that makes Dubai so unique has taken place in the last fifty years, but the ancient city is still there underneath the modern razzmatazz. Explore the original Dubai by cruising on a traditional dhow through Dubai Creek or sightseeing in the older quarters.

The downright bizarre: Okay, it has to be admitted that part of Dubai's attraction is its numerous oddities. There are the golf courses in the middle of the desert and the indoor ski slope ? oh, and don't forget the world's only 'seven star' hotel. The city also boasts a collection of man-made islands constructed to resemble the world. Hey, if you've got enough cash you could even buy the UK.

The food: As befits a leading global city, Dubai has its fair share of fantastic restaurants. Whatever your tastes you're sure to find them here from French to Italian to Middle Eastern, Dubai delivers all types of cuisine with a flourish. If you're looking for something a little more authentic, head to the city centre to sample the range of restaurants surrounding the souks.

Outside the city: Its stark and somewhat inhospitable location in the middle of the desert is partly what gives Dubai such a unique feel. Take a day out to visit the Hajar Mountains, or cruise through the desert in a luxury four-by-four to truly appreciate this incredible natural setting.

Last but not least, of course, it's impossible to mention Dubai's premier attractions without referring to the numerous opportunities for retail therapy on offer. From traditional souks to massive malls, this really is the shopaholic's dream destination. Let's just say that you won't be going home empty handed.
