A car is sometimes the only efficient way to travel around your chosen destination. Buses and trains may be unreliable or inconvenient, and it takes precious vacation time working out how to use them. Taxis can be costly, and again they may not be able to take you all the places you want to go. So, if you've decided that hiring a car is the only effective solution, what should you know before booking?

- What are your needs? Beyond the usual requirements - length of hire, size of car, etc. - what kind of features do you want the car to be equipped with? Air conditioning? Child seats? Make sure you specify exactly what you require well in advance.

- Who's driving? Most companies will require drivers to be over 21, and have held a driving license for a minimum of three years. There may also be a surcharge for drivers under 25 and another surcharge for having an extra driver, so you're planning to take it in turns to drive, do some research. Some car hire companies will allow an extra driver for free.

- A nicer car will be more expensive to book. It comes down to personal taste but bear in mind that hiring that Audi soft top will cost much more than a run-of-the-mill family car.

- If you think you'll be driving long distances make sure you indicate 'unlimited mileage' on the form, otherwise you'll be charged a penalty fee for exceeding the agreed limit.

-You'll always need to buy car insurance alongside the car hire so make sure you choose a suitable policy which at the least covers collisions and theft. Check that there's no overlap with your travel insurance policy otherwise you'll be paying twice. Beware; cheap car hire usually comes with expensive or very basic car insurance - make sure you'll be able to meet the cost of any excess fee.

- As you're you getting the car, check it over, taking photographs if necessary and keep your own record of its condition.? Check that you know the basics down to the local traffic laws, which may have some quirks and what type of fuel the car takes.

- Lastly, make sure you return the car on time lest you'll receive a penalty charge. Also be present at the final inspection, and keep all paperwork until you're satisfied nothing has gone wrong ? it's not unheard of for people to be charged unexpectedly, after the holiday has ended.
