Anyone shopping on the high street this season will have noticed a distinctly nautical theme running throughout the summer collections. From classic navy, white and red striped sweaters, tshirts and shorts, through to anchor symbols and rope prints too, this is by far the biggest look on the high street.
If you are looking for the perfect footwear for summer, look for this seasons must-have boat or deck shoe. This vintage-inspired classic is great for incorporating both the nautical and the travel themes that are so big this year. Another summer essential is the espadrille - a comfortable summery classic in a variety of canvas colours with straw soles.
Summer eyewear is still big on 2 Ray Ban classics - the wayfarer and the aviator. Rather than slim metal frames, aviators now come in a range of bolder plastic colour frames, while the half-frame wayfarer shape is an essential purchase.
With the 80s ska and mod look, as well as the grunge look that was so big in the 90s still ruling supreme, it comes as no surprise that the must-have shirts for this season are check and tartan. Wear extra baggy over a tshirt, or tuck in and button up to the neck.
Gone are the skinny jeans of last season. This year men's trousers and jeans loosen up a little with the tapered carrot shape being the biggest trend on the high street. These trousers are fitted to the waist and then taper in at the bottom hem, like a more tailored harem pant.
No summer wardrobe is complete without the perfect shorts. This season sees a return to classic tailoring in the shorts department, so look for crisp, clean front seams and pleating too. A key shape is the slim fit short that reaches almost to the knee, with key fabrics including pastel shade twill and faded black denim.
While the trilby is finally on the wane, hats made from natural materials like straw are big news. The main shapes are classics - the panama and the fedora. Both have a summery feel and incorporate the key vintage travel trend too.
Perhaps one of the biggest trends for summer is the vintage-inspired travel theme. Looking to the fashions of the Grand Tour elite of the 20s, 30s and 40s, good tailoring is key. Vintage s-belts as well as boaters and deck shoes will see you through this trend, which you will find in haute couture, designer and high street outlets like New Looks men's clothes selections.
