For many, porcelain veneers are the perfect answer to the perfect smile. Of course, this type of perfection comes with what can be a hefty price, sometimes in the vicinity of $10,000 or more.
Back in the 1980s bonding was the way to go. Bonding was a huge advance in cosmetic dentistry. It not only solved problems with stains and chipped teeth, it helped even out teeth and repair cracks. Insurers thought of this as a type of filling, and it was, so having the process done was very inexpensive if you had any type of decent dental insurance. It was fast, painless, and almost miraculous in the transformations it would make easily and painlessly.
However, bonding had its limitations. It did tend to chip, mainly because it's a material that is coated onto your teeth. A simple air bubble between the layers could cause an unsightly crack or total loss of the coating. The bonding also had a tendency to stain, and these stains could only be removed by either buffing them out at your dentist's office, or by reapplying the bonding. In either case, it was cheap and effective. Many bonded teeth dating back to the 80s are still looking good today!
New advances have changed all that. We now have porcelain veneers. These resemble teeth, or at least the fronts of teeth, that are custom sized to fit your needs, and then glued on with a special adhesive. The colors are chosen to match your current teeth. If you plan on having your teeth whitened, do this first, then have the veneers matched to your new shade. If you and your dentist agree, both procedures can usually be done in the same visit with no side effects. Keep in mind that the whitening may make your gums sensitive, and the veneers do require some instrumentation to be used at the gum line. You may find out you need to wait a few days instead.
As with bonding, there is little prep work other than the dentist needing to prepare the actual tooth. This usually includes nothing more than some buffing to rough up the surface just enough so that the adhesive needed will hold in place. There is no pain, and there are no after effects.
For patients who have a tight budget, having two teeth done with veneers to start with is the usual course of action. Each one costs about $900 and this can be expensive for many families. As these first two are paid off, a few more might be added. Nowadays, a veneer has become a popular request for a birthday or holiday gift! Forget the new pearl or diamond for your necklace. Buy a tooth!
A veneer resembles the front of a tooth. It is custom sized to fit your tooth and your mouth. It is not placed over your tooth, like a cap, but rather it is glued onto your tooth. Your original tooth is left alone other than to have the surface sanded a bit so that the adhesive will work better.
Porcelain Veneers Toronto are usually custom made. Your first consult will allow your dentist to take impressions and measurements. Your second visit is when the teeth are placed. It's simple, painless, and you will have immediate beautiful results the second you walk out of the office.
