Undertakers, also known as Funeral Directors, are professionals who manage activities and services related to funerals. To be successful in this profession the person performing these tasks should have certain important and unique skills and attributes.

An undertaker should be active and be ready to work beyond normal schedule, as he should be on call 24 hours a day. This is primarily an outdoors task, which will require him to be outside the office for most of the time.

The undertaker should be able to respect the sentiments of customers, listen and comprehend their needs and interact lucidly. He must be able to handle and communicate with people of different ages and people having various religious and cultural backgrounds. Understanding and compassion will be of great importance as he performs his job. But he will have to offer support to the bereaved family and must stay strong and emotionally detached so that he can perform his functions well.

Although the task is by nature sombre and serious, the undertakers should bring dignity and serenity to the proceedings instead of more grief or unhappiness through their attitude.

Knowledge of different religious customs, rituals and beliefs and profound respect for these helps undertakers find success in their profession. As different people follow various funeral customs and rituals, it is advantageous to have understanding of these.

Good management and the ability to organise are important skills an undertaker should possess. A number of services will have to be organized by the undertaker and this will need good coordination and management ability from the undertaker.

An undertaker must be proficient in legal matters and must know the official procedures to be followed, or the necessary approvals needed from the government authorities before organizing funeral ceremonies. The essential regulations and formalities to be completed to obtain a death certificate or to file valid insurance claims should also be known to him.

Finally, he must necessarily be able to and be eligible to drive vehicles such as limousines and hearses during the funeral service.
