What is hydration and how does it pertain to your skin? How to keep your skin and body moisturized and hydrated.

Water makes up to 98 percent of our body and without this life-giving fluid, you and I would not survive. The human body can survive for up to three weeks on water alone, withhold the water and you might make it four to five days. It's a truly amazing and health-sustaining fluid!

Water aids in many bodily functions. Water aids in metabolism, digestion, absorption, circulation and excretion. Water also helps keep our skin healthy and glowing. Water gives the skin a radiant, healthy, younger looking complexion, reduces wrinkles and allows skin to maintain its elasticity and suppleness. Keeping skin hydrated from the outside in also can aid in calming eczema and psoriasis. In addition, proper hydration will help to eliminate sunken eyes and under-eye circles. Skin plumpness is also a benefit of drinking water.

Proper hydration and water consumption is very important to keeping our bodies healthy and our skin glowing. However, water consumption is not the only factor in keeping skin hydrated and moist. Many external elements can be damaging and drying to the skin, such as harsh cleansing routines and a hot, dry environment. It is important to protect the skin externally as well as internally. Hydrating and moisturizing the skin externally will shield and repair the epidermal layer of the skin, which is the outer most layer of skin that is exposed to the elements. The key to finding proper moisture levels for your skin is to find hydrating ingredients in your skin care products in combination with appropriate water consumption.

What Are Moisturizers?

Moisturizers are widely used products that are important in many dermatologic and cosmetic skin therapies. When there is a change of the epidermal (top, exposed layer of skin) barrier and reduced water content in the top layer of skin, moisturizers are a key component of basic skin care. They are used to restore the protective barrier function of the skin, to cover tiny tears or cracks, to provide a soothing protective film and increase the water-content of the epidermis. They may, slow evaporation of the skin's moisture, thereby maintaining hydration and improving the appearance of dry and aging skin. Some breakthrough formulas now on the market offer effects such as anti-aging, skin-firming, anti-cellulite, and sun-protection.

How Do Moisturizers Work?

For many years, epidermal water content has been known to be crucial for skin plasticity and the prevention of "dry skin." Water originates in the deeper epidermal layers and moves upward to hydrate cells, eventually being lost to evaporation.

Ingredients that aid skin hydration and smoothness are: Aloe Vera, Jojoba oil, Propylene Glycol, Vitamin E and Hyaluronic Acid.

Aloe Vera has been used for centuries in natural skin care practices as a dry skin moisturizer. Aloe gel has produced surprising results in replenishing lost moisture from the skin and is an effective ingredient in any dry skin moisturizer. Aloe Vera quickly and efficiently delivers nutrients into the skin, increasing their effectiveness and performance.

Jojoba Oil is an important ingredient to look for in moisturizer geared toward oily skin types. Jojaba oil mimics sebum–the body’s natural oil-and slows excessive oil production while still maintaining a balanced moisture level for oily skin.

Propylene Glycol offers superb penetration through the skin and excellent humectant properties to soften and moisturize.

Vitamin E is an important ingredient in a dry skin moisturizer because it penetrates the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis) and maintains moisture levels of the skin for long periods of time while fighting free radicals and repairing damaged skin tissue.

Hyaluronic Acid works like Aloe vera as a carrier allowing the skin to absorb other ingredients properly.

Many factors go into keeping your body and skin healthy. Drinking plenty of water and using a good facial moisturizer is the best start to taking care of your skin internally and externally. Eight, 8-ounce glasses of water are recommended daily for optimal body function.
