We've all seen a cubic zirconium rings. They're...not exactly nice, but they do indeed have their own special charm. They look like diamonds, but not quite. And since they aren't diamonds, they lack something that all quality heavy weight diamonds have: a certificate of authenticity.

Indeed, certified diamond rings are the real deal and nothing will ever come quite as close. They're special. But why are there certified diamonds rings? Most other gems don't have certificates of authenticity...why should diamonds?

Well, first look at how hard it is to find diamonds. Wars have been started over these precious jewels. They're valuable and extremely beautiful. To newlyweds and even those who have been married for years, they are a symbol of eternity and everlasting love.

But again, they aren't easy to find, or at least, not as a finished product. Coal is everywhere, but it's only about the third step when it comes to diamond procuring. The first step is pretty much soil erosion. Diamonds are formed from carbon—so is the graphite found in your pencils. These are some of the only things on earth that actually are made primarily from carbon. Diamonds form under pressure and heat for thousands of years. It may take them even longer to make it to a level in which they can be mined. However, only a certain amount of diamonds are used in jewelry.

When a diamond is found, it isn't all pretty and shapely like you see in cartoons. Most of the time it needs a lot of polishing and shaping to make it suitable for jewelry. On the other hand, there are a few diamonds that just naturally happen to come out pretty and clear and need very little polishing.

There are also several different levels of clarity when it comes to diamonds. Some may be nearly see through (very very high clarity) and others may be yellow, which indicated lower clarity. But, there is a difference between yellow diamonds and diamonds with minimal clarity. There are yellow and blue and other colors of diamond. However, you can tell when you have a bad clarity when you look at the diamond; it will look cloudy, there will be scratches, bubbles, chips, or white or black spots.

It's because of this that most certified diamond rings come with certificates of authenticity. They show things about the diamond that a regular everyday person would not be able to see in comparison to a licensed jeweler who looks at diamonds and other gems and jewels for a living.

But having this certificate never hurts or harms. With certified diamond rings, you generally are presented with a document also stating their weight in carats, their clarity/inclusions, what shape they are cut into (round cut, rose cut, princess cut, cushion cut, etc.), and other factors, like the cost of the diamond per carat in the case of larger diamonds. In the case that you happened to lose your ring or the diamond, you would be able to present a document identifying the diamond and you as the owner.
