High quality watches can be expensive. Maintain your investment by taking the time to care for your watch. Few realize that watches require simple and frequent maintenance to keep working at the most effective levels. Maintenance is especially important for watches that are only worn occasionally or on special occasions. When a watch isn't worn often, the small gears may lose their lubrication and stop working properly. If you don't regularly wear your watch, make sure that you at least take the time to wind it, clean it and keep it working properly. After all, who wants to have to purchase a new watch simply because the old one wasn't treated properly?

One thing that is important to note is to keep your watch away from extremely hot or freezing cold temperatures. If you know that you are going to be outside in severe climates, simply don't wear your watch. If you need to buy an inexpensive back-up version for these types of situations, by all means do so. Similarly, if you are playing a sport that involves a great deal of arm motion, you may want to skip wearing your watch.

Watches also need regular cleaning. Dirt is everywhere, and your watch can build up a dirty residue if it is not wiped clean regularly. Wipe the entire watch, including the face, with a soft cloth to easily remove dirt, oil and sweat. Professionally cleaning the watch and its inner workings every couple of years is recommended. This maintenance will keep your gears in optimal condition.

Don't forget to also wind your watch. Even self-winding watches will stop running after a few days. Make sure that you manually wind your watch to keep it in good condition. Be sure to wind it in a forward direction. Just wind to the point where you feel a bit of resistance and then stop.

Your watch is an investment and should be treated as such. By taking the time to properly maintain your watch, it will last for many years and remain a quality and high functioning timepiece. Watch maintenance doesn't really take too much time, but it will be worth it when it comes to the life of your watch. If you handle a watch properly, you can hand it down from generation to generation.
