Getting a student visa to UK – easier or harder than ever before?
In January 2010 the rules of acquiring a
student visa to UK changed once again. For Indian students aspiring to study in one of the most popular study locations in Europe – the United Kingdom – there are two options now. One can apply under a Student Visitor category if the duration of studies does not exceed six months. This visa is not extendable and does not allow working during studies.
Another option is applying for Tier 4 General Student Visa under a point-based system. If the duration of studies is 12 months or more, students are allowed to stay in the UK for the duration of studies plus four more months. They are also entitled to work 20 hours per week during studies and full time during study vacation. For students opting to study 6-12 months, Tier 4 gives an option to stay in the UK for up to two months after the studies. For courses lasting less than 6 months, Tier 4 allows students to stay for one extra week after the studies.

Student Visa to UK, one needs to do a course at an acceptable level with an approved education provider (also known as a sponsorhip). That means that a student should join a higher education organisation which is listed on Tier 4 register of sponsors and get a confirmation of acceptance for studies from there.
Applicants are also required to provide proof of having sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses. For example, a student joining a programme that lasts for more than nine months in inner London must have first year course fees and show £7,200 to cover living costs for nine months on his/her bank account 28 days before the date of visa application.
