A conman has been jailed for attempting to claim compensation from some London councils for fake injuries that he never actually had. Nathan Williams claimed that he had tripped and fallen due to the pavement in several streets across eight different boroughs in London.
The prosecutors who investigated the case estimated that if claims had got as far as the courts each one could have then amounted to a total of 20,00 in compensation being rewarded to Mr Williams wrongly. The authorities would have been over 100,000 down due to costs incurred if this had happened.
Williams had started court proceedings claiming that he had suffered injuries in the following London Areas; Hackney, Greenwich, Westminister, Haringey, Southwark and Tower Hamlets. Each of the incidents occurred in the time between Jan 2007 and Dec 2008.
38 year old Mr Williams gave fictitious accounts of the incidents in order to place the string of false claims against the authorities as well as the TfL (Transport for London.)
Mr Williams has also obtained 2800 for a claim in a separate situation, this claim was made against a private company according to Southwark Crown Court.
Mr Williams is currently unemployed and does not live at a fixed address. He has seven previous convictions and pleaded guilty to eight counts of fraud. He was then sentenced to fifteen months in prison for each count.
A fifteen month sentence was given for each of the false claims Mr Williams submitted and the court ruled that he must serve the sentences concurrently in succession. The judge ruled that he must serve at least half of the total sentence behind bars.
The fraud charge finally came to light when an investigator then noticed that a succession of claims had been made by the same claimant.
The defense barrister Mr Lewis Green concluded that no money was given to Mr Williams by the local authorities involved. No money was given to him by the TfL either due to the insurance organisations 'smelling a rat,' before the claims got that far.
