Have you ever caught yourself using the word "should" when talking about something which needs to be done, but does not get done? This is actually a quite common word for people to fall back on when they talk about their goals. Several of us view "should" as a convenient, one syllable word which acts as a fail-safe when we are confronted about our bad habits. What we fail to recognize is that such a harmless looking and sounding word is deadly to our eagerness to make money fast. This word "should" tells us that while we know we need to do one thing, it is okay to put that thing to the side and carry on.
What is it that we are really telling ourselves when we say that we "should" do something?
1. There is a task which lays ahead, that you dread taking on. Realize that when we are looking forward to doing something, we just do it. We do not say that we "should" do it. For instance, we never say that we should accept payment for our services rendered. However, when it comes to actually doing the drudgery for which we eventually will get paid, it becomes a "should." People often experience the same type of behavior when they look at the steps which need to be taken in order to make money fast. This is why it is so important for you to enjoy you what you ultimately do to make money fast. When you enjoy the process which brings you to the ultimate goal, your experience if one which you look forward to, and does not become a "should."
2. You have no intention of doing it, and have the perfect excuse as to why. "I (should) A, B, and C," is usually followed by, "but EXCUSE EXCUSE EXCUSE." When you engage is this type of behavior, you are shouting to the world that you agree that you know that one course of action would take you down the right path, but that you plan to do the exact opposite. Just think of how foolish you would sound telling your boss, "I know that the appropriate thing to do is to stay late and finish the proposal so I am prepared for tomorrow's meeting, but instead of doing that, I am going to go home and watch Monday Night Football on my sixty-five inch LCD-TV and take the chance of not finishing it before the meeting tomorrow morning." If this is what you really mean, why bother disguising with a "should?" Deep down, you know what is really going on. Just be honest with everyone, including yourself.
3. You are well aware of the changes which need to be made to improve your life, however, you are delaying. Each and every one of you reading this article who knows that you should lower your blood pressure, quit smoking, or get an advanced degree, know just what needs to be done in order to live a healthier lifestyle, feel more energetic, and advance in your job. Unfortunately for you, the word "should" provides you with the comfort that you have acknowledged what needs to be done. The problem is that you are not doing it. Just sitting by idly, and allowing life to just happen to you is easy. Grabbing life and molding it in a manner which you have always envisioned takes effort, but pays off several times over.
If you have a long list of "should's" and a short list of "goals," take a piece of paper, write down the which of the "should's" you need to take action on to accomplish your goals, and take action. If your goal is to make money fast, and one of your "should's" is to create a website, then create a website ASAP, and stop letting day on which money can be made, go to waste. You will never get those days back. They are now a part of history.
What I want you to do, is to sit down and think hard about what your should's are. Once you have determined all of your should's, turn them into categorical "will's" and will not's." Do away with "should" completely. The word "should" weakens you and holds you back. However, the word "will" equips you with the strength and avidity to realize your goals.
