Driving Test Changes In The UK

Driving test candidates will now have to drive without instructions from an examiner for the first part of their test, thanks to changes by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Instead of publishing set routes online, candidates will be expected to drive independently a route shown to them in advance. It has been made clear, however, that reminders can still be given and drivers will not be automatically failed from diverging from the route.

Learners will be prepared for real life driving circumstances by the new rules. Mike Penning, the Road Safety Minister feels that this will be more beneficial, as an independent driving proficiency "from the start of the driving process will help make new drivers safer."

Peter Rodger, chief examiner of the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) agrees that this is a good step forward. He stated that "all new drivers have to learn that multi-tasking - controlling the car, looking out for hazards and planning ahead while navigating - is an integral part of day-to-day driving."

The test has been labelled as unforgiving and harsh by its critics. A senior driving instructor has put forward the belief that the changes to the test will result in a plummeting pass rate. The new test will be longer and drivers could be failed for just a small collection of minor driving faults. Its defenders claim the changes will not make the test more challenging but is instead aimed at making safer drivers. Learners are already used to being taught independent driving, and the test has been made simpler by slashing the number of manoeuvres.

It has been suggested that the DSA are missing the point that the biggest road safety problem is still new drivers. The Association of British Insurers is calling for more changes to the test, suggesting that the learning period for new drivers should be at least one year. Their poll of 2,500 people revealed that 75% thought new drivers should not be permitted to take their test within 12 months of learning, to help reduce the high death and serious injury rate recorded among young motorists.
