Nissan is continuing to take reservations through its website and is planning a test drive tour this fall with hopes to grant drives to 40,000 to 50,000 people, who be able to kick the tires and get behind the wheel. This will occur months before the vehicle arrives in dealership showrooms, when consumers will be able to purchase the vehicle in a more traditional way.
Nissan is basing its strategy on making electric vehicles that cost the same as regular cars when fuel costs are taken into account. To bring costs down, in addition to economies of scale through mass production, Nissan is asking governments around the world to subsidize "emissions-free" cars with tax breaks and other incentives. Nissan is playing catch up to a Chinese automaker in the electric car arena. Innovation and techology does not just come from Japan and the US.
Nissan is going after the global market just as petroleum prices near triple their 2008 low and as major cities impose congestion fees for non zero emission vehicles and they are planning capacity to build 150,000 cars a year in Tennessee. Alas the compares unfavorably with today's gasoline engine cars to be a serious hit.
Nissan is the third largest Japanese automotive manufacturer and a significant rival to major American car manufacturers. The company began as Datsun in 1914, and first claimed its current name in 1932, as a manufacturer of trucks, engines and planes for the Japanese military.
Nissan is going to offer factory installed GPS navigation systems in their vehicles for a reasonable price. As you know GPS navigation is an add on for most other car makers that usually tag about $2000 to the price of the vehicle.
