There are so many ways to learn Spanish that it is hard to know where to start. Trying to decide which Spanish teaching system will be best for you can take some time. But there is help.
Your can narrow your choices by considering how you think you might like to learn. That is, do you think you want to use listening as your primary strategy or perhaps reading or even activity as a learning method? Here is how to go about it.
Immersion is a method that uses little or no English to explain what you learn. Instead, you repeat a phrase and either see visual clues or a photo of what the phrase might mean. It can take some getting used to, but many people like it. If you like suspense, then this one might be for you.
Immersion does require patience and a sense of adventure. It is possible that another method would be more your style. Conversational Spanish uses at least some English to help with structure and grammar. It can also incorporate reading and writing but in fairly limited amounts. Conversation is the backbone of this method.
A college class in Spanish can be one of the above methods or a more structured approach that uses grammatical and structural explanations of the language. These are followed by written practice and spoken repetition often in a laboratory setting.
Going to a school that specializes in Spanish is an option that uses all of the above and provides an opportunity to learn about the culture as well. These classes are usually in one or two week blocks. The classes are from 4 to more hours a day and use conversation, reading and writing.
And, while there are even more methods, there is one that combines them all. For about 8 hours a day, in blocks of one week, these accelerated methods classes use games, pictures, movement, reading and writing in each lesson. Your preferred method will be used during one or another aspect of the class.
So while there is indeed a vast number of online, in the classroom and residential options out there, you can sample some of the above options to see which one you might prefer. After a little looking here and there, you can decide which Spanish teaching system might be best for you. Just remember that any system requires practice. There are none that can teach you Spanish without some effort.
