The San Joaquin valley is known for its fertile farmland and is often called “the nation’s salad bowl”. But did you know it’s also known for its fantastic national parks? Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are fantastic places to visit (as long as you plan to spend the night at Fresno hotels). The parks contain various unique regions, each with its own specific features.
The lower elevations of Sequoia National Park are known as the foothills and include the South Fork area. This part of the parks houses a different variety of plants and animals than the conifer forests. And the biological diversity is much higher than in the other regions. Due to its low elevation, the foothills get very little snow and offer up abundant wildflowers in spring and summer. Check out the Foothill’s Visitor Center to see all kinds of exhibits, books, maps and more. But be sure to spend the night a short drive away in one of many comfortable Fresno hotels.
The Giant Forest and Lodgepole area is home to the world’s biggest trees and over forty miles of trails. The elevation is 6,400 feet so it’s prone to deep snow and very cold winter days. Here you’ll find the Giant Forest Museum which houses exciting exhibits about sequoia ecology.
Grant Grove, originally General Grant National Park, was created in 1890 to protect sequoias from logging. You can learn a lot about early logging and how the forest restore’s itself. This area is at 6,600 feet elevation so it also has lots of snow in winter.
Cedar Grove is a glaciated valley full of towering granite cliffs, waterfalls and impressive King’s River. In this area of the parks you can check out Roaring River Falls where a powerful waterfall rushes through a granite chute. After a day visiting the Cedar Grove sights, head back to Fresno, hotels are much more comfy than camping!
