There is a lot of risk when creating a business. There are a lot of opportunities to fail and lose a lot of money. But, there is also the potential to completely turn your life around. How you manage the risk emotionally and strategically will determine the future of your business. The important thing is that you weigh all your options, look at the pro and cons, and make decisions based on the direction you want your business to go in the future. One decision that you may have to make is whether or not to use the services of an umbrella company.
Umbrella companies function exactly as the name suggests. The purpose of an umbrella is to protect the people under it from unfavorable conditions such as sun or rain, and these companies function on the same premise. They protect and the people under them in the corporate world. The people under the umbrella usually operate their own separate business but they all take advantage of all the services that the umbrella companies offer. Technically, they aren't corporations themselves; it is simply a way of structuring a company that will offer the maximum amount of advantages for the consumers or the individual companies within it.
Umbrella companies are here to help business and corporations such as yours. They have gained the vast approval of the Fed simply because they help stimulate the economy through the growth of business. They give opportunities to people who wouldn't have a chance otherwise. However, that is how the ideal company would function. The truth is there are some that have been corrupted by greed. That is why you need to do your own investigation before you decide to join one.
In the business world you should always be protecting yourself and watching your back. An umbrella company can be your golden ticket to launching a successful business, but only if your ideals and theirs line up. You can tell if they are compliant depending on how they treat you. As an entity within them, you should essentially be treated as a regular employee. You are entitled to the minimum wage. You are entitled to a certain amount of paid vacation time each year. If you are not receiving all of your due benefits, then that company is not compliant.
How the umbrella company treats you have huge implications on whether or not you should join under them. Most reputable companies at least have an human resources department. If not then I would be quick to question the legitimacy of that company. The purpose of them is to protect and shield you. If it is not doing that job, then you should take your services elsewhere.
