If you check out the styles of tennis apparel for women down through the decades starting from the early years of the last century, you will notice a shortening of skirts. Men may like the look, but women know the real reason for this is not for the sake of appearance, but for the sake of comfort. If you're not comfortable you can't play well. Ill fitting clothing will definitely affect your performance. So comfort and quality matter most.

Comfortable, and yes, stylish tennis clothing is now easy to find. And designers will never run out of ideas. All they need to do is look at what is currently being worn by the professionals. Therefore, it's fairly obvious that how the clothing looks, while not as important as the quality and comfort, is still important. The media is just as likely to write about what the top ranked players wear as they are to write about what happened on the court. But don't jump on the media for being so shallow. The only reason those fashion articles get written is because people like to read them.

Think back to the early years of the last century. The game of tennis was played on lawns and the women in England all wore formal clothing to play. The tennis apparel for women consisted of something full length. But the game wasn't nearly as professional as it is today. Tennis is everywhere and those in the industry spend billions on advertising. Long ago it was all about loose fitting cotton fabric for those wanting comfort. Now synthetic fabrics in a multitude of colors are popular for women around the world.

While some sports produce unisex outfits that can be worn by men and women, that's not how it works in tennis. There's a large revenue source out there, and companies are competing with advertising and marketing to get a larger portion of those dollars. Those are dollars that are available because men and women wear different clothing. The clothing designed for women must look great, and make them feel great and play their best in all weather conditions. If you want to play your best you'll want clothing that's both snug and comfortable.

The times have definitely changes. Almost all courts the world over allow multi colored clothing today instead of the all white garments sported earlier. Shorts are usually worn by men while skirts are common among women. Although where allowed women can be seen wearing shorts as well.

So how do you choose your tennis apparel for women? If it's a skirt, look at the length and fit. Obviously you'll be uncomfortable if the skirt is too tight. On the other hand, your performance will suffer if the skirt is too loose also.

Tennis is no longer an ordinary sport. It's highly competitive and athletes continue to get better. If you want to compete, you need to feel comfortable as you jump, twist, cut and swing. Even though tennis apparel for women is loose fitting, it should be not too loose for comfort. Lightness in fabric is required to withhold moisture. While playing tennis, the last thing you want is for your clothing to affect your performance. And of course you want to look good too!
