A variety of indoor and outdoor digital signage signs have been making a massive impact on consumers in Japan recently. The innovative new signage systems measure the gender and age of the person viewing them. The digital signs process the age and gender of the viewer yet they do not keep any of the information after it has been processed. The systems match the viewer to advertisements they have stored that will suit them.
The systems can measure the sex, age and overall engagement of those watching them, and they are innovative as they are only being used in Japan at the moment. Signage systems do not keep any of the data they capture-the processing is momentary and the systems do not have memory.
The software that is used identifies the sex correctly around ninety percent of the time and is able to tell the age of a person (within a ten year window frame) seventy percent of the time. The figures suggest the signs are fairly accurate and reliable.
So far one hundred units of the signs have been shipped, but this figure is expected to increase as demand rises in the coming months. The boards offer endless opportunities for advertisers,
This latest technology gives advertisers the opportunity to visibly see who is interested in their products rather than just relying upon guess work. Although images are not kept a record of gender, etc., is. There are plans to develop the signs further to allow them to select appropriate items for people at vending machines for example.
The firm conducting research into the success of the digital systems has also concluded that Japan was, in 2009, responsible for eight percent of global public display system shipment in 2009- the figure is now expected to double for 2010. At the moment the signs are unique to Japan but other countries are expected to purchase them soon.
The digital signage advertising industry is thought to be worth 128bn Japanese yen by 2015 but in 2009 it was worth 55bn. The amount of growth shows how important and influential advertising using digital signs has become.
