Every once in a while, it is a nice idea to get a group or workforce together and reinforce the team concept. In today's high speed, high stress world, it is easy to become self-absorbed and take care of only Number One. We all could use a reminder once in a while that we are one piece of a bigger picture and have to work together to accomplish many tasks; here are some ideas for outdoor team building activities.
A very effective outdoor team building activity is something that can be called "American football futbol." Hardly any equipment is needed; just an American football that is kicked soccer style down the field and across a goal line. The concept is incredibly simple, but the execution is far from it. The oblong shape of the football virtually guarantees that no one on either team will know where it's going to bounce next, so much so that a goalie is not even utilized. Not only is it a blast, but even veterans of soccer and football are suddenly placed on equal footing to everyone else. It is a great equalizing, team building tool and good for a many laughs.
Another idea for an outdoor team building activity is to suspend a tire between the trunks of two trees. One team member is then passed through the hole in the tire by the rest of the team members. Easy, right? Not necessarily, because neither is the person being passed through allowed to touch the tire at all, they may not touch the ground as well. Not only is teamwork reinforced, but this activity cultivates trust also. The person being passed along from one teammate to another trusts that he, or she will not plummet to the earth and that the rules will be followed. Additionally, one teammate may need to come to the aid of another if he or she needs some help hoisting their colleague through the tire. That's teamwork at its best.
Don't forget about the proven outdoor team building activity known as the scavenger hunt. Even the popular television show The Amazing Race is based on this premise; give teams a list of items to find and cut them loose. To heighten the level of amusement, you can place the items far apart and have the teams drive around the community to scrounge them up. It's a clean competition that lets people work together to accomplish a task.
Outdoor team building activities provide a break from the rigmarole of daily activities. People build a sense of team while having fun. When people feel like part of the team, the regular job gets done more efficiently and pleasantly.
