Working with a travel agent in planning your next vacation or weekend getaway can be a fantastic experience, and in the long run, going this route could save you hours of precious planning time. However, if you've never worked with a travel professional before you may accidentally miss certain details which are invaluable to a successful vacation experience. To ensure this doesn't happen in your case, this article will outline a short, yet important, set of questions you should always ask before signing off on your vacation package.

The first questions to ask your travel agent before booking vacation accommodation should revolve around the cost of your upcoming trip. Naturally, some places are more expensive to stay than others, but by asking the right questions-questions you might otherwise neglect to ask-you may be able to save a boat load of money. These questions may include: "What's the best time of year to travel?" Or "Are certain days of the week more affordable than others?" Understanding the seasons, months or even days of the week that have less demand can be a great cost-saving measure.

If you're planning to vacation someplace you've never been before this year, you'll definitely want to ask what activities and services are available in the area and how to access them. For example, if shopping is your thing, ask the travel agent for directions to the mall or specialty shops in the area. The last thing you want to do while on vacation is make endless calls and search for directions every time you want to go somewhere, and if you ask your travel agent the right questions beforehand you can generally avoid wasting this time and spend it instead doing something more enjoyable.

Another important question to ask your travel agent is "what travel documents will I need?" If you are planning on leaving the country, even if you're merely going to Mexico or Canada, you will need to have a valid passport. Other documentation may also be required depending on where you go. In some locations you'll need to provide proof of vaccinations or other medical clearances.

Failing to ask all the "right" questions when booking vacation accommodation can be very expensive-in more ways than one. Not only will you generally pay more for flight and hotel costs by neglecting to ask questions, you may also find yourself woefully unprepared when you get there. Even simple questions such as "what is the weather typically like this time of year" could wind up saving you a lot of time, money and hassle in the long run.
