A business will experience a number of monetary transactions as part of its daily procedures, and someone needs to account for them. They need to be ordered, recorded, and reported through the proper channels. Your business may be thinking about employing an accountant, and there are a few things to consider when hiring one.
It may sound elementary, but one of the first things you should think about is whether your business needs a full-time accountant or if you can get by with a bookkeeper. This will almost certainly depend on the size of your business and the number of transactions it experiences. If your business does not perform numbers great enough to make transposing them into the proper P&L and tax forms difficult, a bookkeeper may be enough. If a more experienced, and therefore more costly, accountant is needed, decide if they need to be on staff full time or if you simply need a part time accountant. You may even find yourself outsourcing to an accounting firm if there aren't enough occasions on which to warrant the employment of an accountant.
Once you have looked at all of your accounting needs and have made the decision to hire an accountant, look at how long those you are considering have been in operation. You would probably want to take your car to an established mechanic for repairs, and you would likely want the accountant you hire to bring a certain amount of experience with them. This experience will come in handy when problems arise because he, or she has probably come across the issue before and will know how to resolve it. A lengthy time in business also indicates that they are meeting the needs of their clients. Someone who has been around awhile will be more expensive, but their salary is worth the amount of time and trouble the accountant will save.
The government is of course going to look for their share of your business's profit, so look for an accountant who is adept with tax planning. This is a year round job, so hire an accountant who continually communicates with and advises the business in tax matters and knows how to properly report figures. A good accountant understands how the tax system works, so look to see how often they are Audited. If it seems that they experience Audits often, they may not be doing a very good job.
Because an accountant manages the money for your business, take the time to find an efficient and effective one. Once they have been working with you for some time, it is more difficult to replace them with another accountant and basically go through the training process again. Taking the time to consider these tips will help you down the road.
