One thing which I find somewhat troubling, is the fact that so many people become involved in a home based business for the purpose of gaining more family time. What these people often find out, is that they have less time than they did before leaving their jobs and taking on a home based business. Nonetheless, I think I have come up with a few solutions. We will discuss these solutions further below.
In the beginning, you must constantly remind yourself that your new home based business in not dissimilar to a new job. Similar to a new job, you will experience a learning curve. This will be the case even if your business is in an area in which you are familiar. For instance, you may not have the same time saving technology for your home business as you were accustomed to in the past. However, over time, you will find that you become more adept at doing things, and may even discover new ways to become more efficient by multi-tasking.
The thing that you may not like to read, is the fact that entrepreneurs often have to make sacrifices early in their business in order to prosper in the future. This is something which you must know for yourself, and explain clearly to your family. When you initially engage in a home based business, you have a myriad of responsibilities. You are not yet able to delegate these responsibilities, as the business is not yet generating enough revenue to pay for such services. However, once the business becomes prosperous, many of the requisite duties, such as marketing, accounting, secretarial work, etc., can be delegated to third parties.
It is clear that, especially in the early stages of your home based business, you have a finite number of hours available to you daily. Here are some suggestions which may help.
For instance, you may have children at home who have a tendency to interrupt your work flow. What is most often the case is that your children do not truly understand how busy you actually are. Thus, you can explain to your children the difference between your "work" hours, and your "home" hours. Clearly convey the fact that you are "at work" during your work hours, and should only be contacted in the case of an emergency, or during breaks.
For those of you who have children at school, make it a priority to schedule your breaks later in the day at a time when your children come home from school. That way, you can spend time with them, and work while they do their homework. Thereafter, it will probably be dinner time, which again gives you more time with your children.
Personally, I need less sleep than do the members of my family. As a result, I am able to frequently work late while my family is sleeping, or wake up early and work, also while my family sleeps.
Your exact solution will be determined by your situation. This must be done in accordance with the specific home based business you are operating. My advice to you is that you make sure that you schedule time for your family. Also, clearly communicate to all members of your family which times you are blocking out for your business activities.
With some good planning and communication, you can be successful in being good to both your family, and your home based business.
