Google uses Page Rank to determine whether or not a website is an authority. In order to do this, Google uses a numbering system of one through ten, with ten being the highest number. Companies like Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo, are typically the type of websites that have a "ten rating." Most typical websites have a Page Rank of somewhere between two and five. Backlinking plays an important role with respect to Page Rank. Typically the more links that there are to a page, then it will more likely get a higher Page Rank.
Trust Rank looks at a website more closely than Page Rank. Lots of webpages out there are just plain spam. What the Trust Rank does is sort the spam out from the valuable web pages. What happens is that Google chooses an expert to review "seed" web pages. Once the target or "seed" web pages are analyzed, then Google uses the web to identify other websites related to that page that have good information. The more relevant the webpage, the higher the Trust Rank and the higher the rating. Highly trusted webpages that link to each other beget webpages with higher Trust Ranks.
Ultimately a combination of high Page Rank ratings and Trust Rank will drive your website's success. More and more Google and other search engines are placing more importance on smarter rankings like Trust Rank. But the tried and true methods of ranking a website such as Page Rank are still incredibly relevant. So if you're going to build a good website, then the key is building up both your website's Trust Rank and Page Rank through known SEO methods.
All said, it's crucial that any website owner know and understand the two most important tools that Google, the largest search engine in the world, uses to rank pages. Because Google is so powerful, and its rating systems carry so much weight, you'll want to ensure that your website's Page Rank and Trust Rank ratings remain high. Understanding how both systems function is essential to implementing successful SEO practices and methods, and you'll want to have someone on your team from the beginning who can help you navigate the complex maze of SEO.
