Best Known Professional Fashion Designers

There are some male fashion designers who have risen to such eminence that their name and brand are as one. Their fashion kudos is so great that people have become confused, thinking Dolce and Gabbana are shoes and bags themselves, rather than the names of people. Likewise, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Giorgio Armani and Thomas Burberry are hugely influential designer brands.

These guys are beyond important because they were, and are, the vanguard of male fashion. It was Ralph Lauren in 1970s who defined American style with his preppy suits that carried through into the 1980s. He is able to remain at the top of the fashion game because he is continually looking to redefine his label's 'look.' For example, by launching the Purple Label, followed by the Black Label in the 1990s, in order to keep the fashion pack on their toes.

The pairing of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are the men who brought sexuality to male dressing. Their clothes are revered for their daring cuts and out-there designs. They do not cater for the shy and retiring, but have a devoted following among those who like to make a statement. For those who prefer to demonstrate a serious masculinity, Hugo Boss is the designer of choice. With his iconic black, three-button suits, he is the power dresser for men and would surely have been the choice of Barack Obama, were it not for the austerity measures of present circumstances.

Men's wardrobes will evidently require sportswear of some form and, in terms of designers, Thomas Burberry's label, first made famous for patenting gabardine and clothing British officers in the First World War, is perhaps the most celebrated. This is because, under Christopher Bailey, the Burberry label took on the task of clothing the world of golf and hasn't looked back since.

Any article on male fashion designers cannot, of course, be complete without the addition of Alexander McQueen. The prince of British fashion, he was a brilliant design radical. It is McQueen who we have to thank for the 'bumster' jean and the notoriety of the skull icon outside the world of pirates. He produced unique and dramatic collections, first under the Givenchy house and then in conjunction with Gucci and his death has been a massive blow to fashion, as both a clothing and art form.
