Executive Job Search: 3 Tips To Help You Score The Jobs You Want

By: Wayne Richardson

Only a few executive resumes make the short list for better positions. The majority are simply ignored. Why? The answer is simple - most executive career summaries look canned. While a resume may present extensive experience and a good list of achievements, few answer the most critical question - what makes you better than the rest? Employers and recruiters need to know this before you are considered a serious contender.

Good news: your resume can usually be improved to increase the quality of response. Here are 3 practical strategies to help you get started:

1. Prepare your resume with the specific intent of showing employers your unique potential. If your resume looks too common, it may not get the attention it deserves. It is critical to strategically differentiate your skills from the masses. Make certain that highlighting your exclusive differentiating factors is an important theme of your presentation.

2. Avoid too many general statements on your resume. Indicate specific results, how they have made a difference and, most importantly, how they can benefit prospective employers now and in the future. Don't just tell, propose.

3. Make your resume worthy of positions you are applying for. Using a $30,000 resume for a $100,000+ job is a mistake. Increase the value of your resume by remembering the employers' bottom line and how you can increase it. Quantify your accomplishments in a way that is easily understood within your industry. Provide a good balance of your leadership skills and business acumen.
