Millions of us choose to spend our holidays in Cornwall every year. As England's most westerly county, Cornwall has a lot to offer tourists. For one there's the climate, which during summer months is often among the hottest places in the UK. And there's also the stunning and varied landscape, offering many options for those who like to get out and explore.
Cornwall is home to the longest coastline in England. It's bordered by three seas, the Atlantic Ocean, Celtic Sea and English Channel. Each coast is different, but what they share in common is miles upon miles of beaches. Some are wide and covered in golden sand, others are more secluded like rocky bays and coves.
Each coast offers a different environment, and the Atlantic coast in the north is a hot spot for surfers. Other water sports practiced off the county's coast include scuba diving and sailing. For those that prefer to get their exercise on firm land, there are hundreds of miles of coastal paths for walkers and hikers, as well as trails inland. A lot of routes are accessible for mountain bikers and horse riders too.
The county is home to abundant species of wildlife and many can be seen when out and about on the county's many nature trails. Cornwall's slim shape means that the sea is always just a stone's throw away, wherever you are in the county. And the sea has played a major part in the county's histories as well as modern day life.
The sea has also led to many local tales of pirates, smugglers and wreckers. Some of them true, others are works of fiction like Daphne du Maurier's Jamaica Inn. Some museums have exhibitions on these subjects as well as other local history. Artists also flock to this part of the UK and there are many places to see their work around the county's galleries.
Many local communities are based around small fishing villages, some which still fish today. Not surprisingly, seafood is plentiful and a staple part of the diet for many spending their holidays in Cornwall. Other local delicacies include the Cornish pasty, which is a meal in itself. The traditional pasty is an individual pie filled with root vegetable and beef. Modern day recipes also have options for vegetarians.
