Located in the north-eastern corner of Somerset, easy to access thanks to its situation on the Bristol to London train line, the city of Bath is a popular resort for visitors from both home and abroad, frequented by all kinds of travellers looking to find an iconic, quintessentially British destination. Indeed its status as one of the only cities across the world to be categorised in its entirety as a World Heritage site only serves to add to its renown.

Bath has kept its status as an important cultural and political location for nigh on two thousand years. During the Roman occupation of this island, they built a network of baths around a thermal spring at this site and constructed a temple for worship of the goddess Sulis. The town grew around the baths, and this became a top place to visit for all those who were suffering with illness, believing as they did that the healing properties of the spring would help them.

In the years that followed Bath kept its status in the political life of this fast-growing country. King Arthur is said to have fought and beaten the Saxons in the hills around the city, while Saxon rulers through the years gradually remodelled its design.

It was only in the Georgian era that Bath was able to regain its place in the British culture, as large-scale building works in the city brought with them some of the landmarks that make it an iconic location the world over to this day. The Royal Crescent, Queen's Square and the Circus are familiar to visitors from all over.

The summertime is when the city truly comes alive, as the sun makes the sublime cityscape glimmer in splendid light. It is the perfect time to go and wander between the limits of Bath, seeing the sights before settling down in the Palace Gardens or by the waterfront.

Places like the Royal Crescent, Queen's Square and the Circus have appeared in thousands of television programmes to the extent that many people who visit the city feel like they're already been there, so familiar are some of the buildings.

In summer Bath is a fantastic place to visit, on a sunny day you can wander from one end of the city centre to the other, taking in many of the famous sites, before relaxing in the Parade Gardens or down by the waterfront. Bath hotels are famed for their hospitality and quality, and if you book well in advance you can almost certainly find yourself a good deal.

More than most other cities in the UK, Bath is always popular and always busy, but it keeps its serene atmosphere and is quite simply a splendid place to go and visit.Lenita Carpinello is a freelance travel writer with a fondness for UK based travel. They recommend Octopus Travel for Bath hotels.
