DNA Makes Crime More Difficult

It gets more challenging each and every year to get away with anything criminal. At least one would get that impression if you were to turn on the TV nearly any night of the week. CSI, or Crime Scene Investigation, rules the CBS roost in three manifestations: Miami, New York, and Las Vegas. NCIS answers these same who'dunnits with a naval twist for an additional two ours each week on the same network.

Voiceprint analysis, CCTV image enhancement, fingerprinting, DNA evidence, ballistic databases, tire-tread analysis, cellphone tower use, spectrographs, and thingamajigs that they don't even bother naming appear to make sure that crime does not pay each and every night.

Oddly it is the exonerations of those suspected of crimes that doesn't quite get the media coverage it deserves nor the use of technology to free the innocent of suspicion. Perhaps the best example of this is Barry Scheck. Mr. Scheck, most known for his defense of the infinitely guilty OJ Simpson, began the Innocence Project in 1992. One would like to think this project began as a noble act rather than a conscience cleanser but the jury is still out on that one.

The Innocence Project, as of May 2008, had exonerated 218 wrongfully convicted, and jailed innocents based on scientific evidence not originally available at trial. The group was instrumental in obtaining the moratorium on the death penalty in the state of Illinois instated by Gov. Ryan in early 2000 that remains to this day.

Recently while reading a delightful depiction of the college campus circa 1954 in the fantastic story, With One Hand Tied Behind His Back: The Life and Times of Gail Stuart, penned by Dick Ramsey, I was immediately angered by the false charges brought against the main character accused of stealing a midterm exam. Stuart would certainly have benefitted from a CSI team or a Barry Scheck but thankfully neither were there to shorten this delightful book. One Hand Tied Behind His Back is available as one complete eBook or 3 separate parts at both Amazon.com and BN.com.
