There are a lot of different reasons as to why your landscape might need a retaining wall. You could have one put in for style and design to give a new look to the overall plan of your landscape. Other reasons that a retaining wall could be installed is if you are have drainage problems, a retaining wall can be built to make sure water flows to where it should. You do not want large amounts of water sitting on your grass, and you do not want water to wash away some of your landscape such as mulch and pine straw.

When you call your landscaper to talk about the addition of a retaining wall, they will put into consideration the placement of the wall, so it does not create unwanted water flow in certain areas. A design that has the placement of the retaining wall to benefit water flow and make your landscaping more appealing will also be put into consideration. Functionality is equally as important as looks when it comes to retainer walls.

When planning your retainer wall, it is important that it does not get put in an area where it looks out of place. Building it where it flows with the natural curvature of your landscape will make it look more subtle, but great at the same time. This is why it is common to see retaining walls that appear to be holding back dirt or a hill. When you see this, it could have to do with the look aspects of your landscaping, or the retaining wall could actually be bearing the weight of the soil.

There are many different things to use when constructing a retaining wall. Some people use basic cement blocks that can be stylish yet effective. This is the best thing to use for load bearing walls. If your retainer wall is being constructed just for aesthetic reasons, people can use different types of stones to make their landscape look very high end.

Using engineered stone is becoming popular because it looks exactly like real stone, but is lighter, which makes it easier to install. Engineered stones are all a lot more budget friendly than real stones. This is especially important when you consider how large a retaining wall can be. It is also nice to incorporate water falls, plants, and lighting with retaining walls so that they not only blend in more, but they can also look more natural in this sense.
