5 Things To Consider When Booking Your Flight Online

When you're planning a trip, whether for business or pleasure, and an airline flight is in your future, it pays to shop around. When you consider all the aspects of flying, including the number of flights in and out of each terminal, layovers, and luggage restrictions, it's enough to make some people want to skip the flight and jump in their car. Booking a flight online is certainly easier than calling the airport and how everyone makes travel arrangements today, but there are a few things to consider when comparing all those flights.

When most people fly, they are either trying to save time or save money. It's not always possible to do both but it warrants comparison nonetheless. A basic flight search on any online travel company website will typically yield several pages of results. For instance, if you compare flights from Dayton, OH to Orlando, FL on Bookit.com, you may get as many as seven or eight pages to weed through. Like many other sites, their search shows a per-person rate as well as total approximate travel time. If you look closely, you'll see that some flights take less time than others that cost the same, and you'll also find cheaper flights that take longer than average. It all depends on the number of stops and layover time.

If you want to save money, you'll likely have to book a flight that has at least one stop. Consider whether or not the inconvenience is an acceptable exchange for the money you save. Some people don't mind layovers but if you travel with small children or have time constraints, you might want to opt for a direct flight. In most cases, a direct flight will cost more but not every in every case. Even those flights that do have stops might take longer than others, depending on when and where the stop is. Consider total travel time and then tack on the added time for airport arrival, check-in and security.

Also consider departure and arrival times. While some flights are occurring during business hours, others may be very early morning or late at night. Again, consider your travel companions and whether these time constraints are an issue. Sometimes, if you're willing to leave very early or arrive very late, you'll get a better deal than mid-day departure and arrival times. If you're crossing time zones, take the time change into consideration when choosing a flight.

If your goal is to save money, you might want to compare prices of flights departing from or arriving at airports slightly farther from your home or destination. Flying out of smaller metropolitan airports may cost more than flying out of a larger metro area an hour or two away. The same goes for the destination. If you plan to rent a car when you arrive at your destination, the savings could be worthwhile.

Another factor you may wish to consider is airline partnerships. Airlines partner with rental car and credit card companies to offer incentives for customers to fly, rent and pay within their partnership. If there is an added bonus of saving money, earning miles, or another incentive that can be quickly realized, it may be worth checking out but be wary of extra fees that might eat up any realized savings or earnings.

Don't forget to check and compare booking fees as well as to thoroughly read cancellation policies, especially if you're booking well in advance. If you are traveling alone, you might want to wait and try to score last-minute deals but don't wait too long if you are set on a departure date. Make sure you know in advance the airline's policies, especially if you have any special needs or are traveling with young children.

Booking flights online is really the easiest way to get your travel arrangements concluded and confirmed, and many travel companies can get you "internet only" deals that you can't get elsewhere. As always, be sure to book the flight with a credit card that shows your name and make sure you have the card with you when you arrive at the airport. Be sure to double check and comply with recommended arrival and check-in times to avoid problems that could result in missing your flight. Once you've confirmed your arrangements, be sure to print and keep all documentation with you at all times.
