Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting veteran goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar to hang up his gloves at the end of this season at the ripe old age of 40. Although the Dutch giant has refused to comment on his future plans Ferguson is planning for it anyway.
The news follows intense speculation that the footballers departure could be down to his rocky relationship with manager Ferguson after a series of bust ups. The latest disagreement came when Fergusson blamed Rooney's absence at United's Premier League fixture against old club Everton in September on an ankle injury.
But soon after, the club's chief executive David Gill revealed that Vidic had verbally agreed a long-term contract to remain at Old Trafford and says he has always wanted to stay at the club, "I don't know why people think it was a difficult decision," he said. "I always said I am happy here. I never spoke about my future. I know there was all this speculation but I never said I wanted to go. There was nothing new. I am very happy to be here."
His new 90,000-a-week contract will make him one of the highest earning players on the squad and the extension will take his deal up to a massive 18.72m.
The club's world cup players, of which there area many, have been excused from the current USA tour so Vidic will sign the deal when he returns from holiday. With the prospective retirement of veterans such as Ryan Giggs and Edwin Van Der Sar, Vidic could become one of the more senior figures in the dressing room.
Rooney went on to bring spectacular victories to the club, enjoying a fantastic 2009/2010 season, in which he scored 34 goals. However, after this years disastrous season, the forward has ironically suffered a minor injury to his right ankle in a tackle with Paul Scholes while training for a match with Bursapor, and will now have to sit out the European tie at Old Trafford. This could spell his final matches for Manchester United.
