Healthy Skin And Sunshine Don't Mix

Have you ever brewed your own iced tea? Place a clear glass pitcher with a few teabags in the sun for several hours to get your very own home-brewed iced tea. How does it work? The sun steeps the tea, intensifying the flavour and creating a strong flavoured beverage. If the sun can do that to a few teabags in water, what does it do to your skin?

Nature gave us a natural defense system against the sun. If the sun was not damaging, we wouldn't need a defense system, now would we?

Our natural defense against the sun is melanin. This is what causes freckles, suntans and darkened skin spots. People from traditional sundrenched areas, such as Africa, are born with high levels of melanin which is why they have dark skin. It's the body's ancestral genetics responding to dangers in the accustomed environment.

Light skinned people who have very little melanin usually burn quite easily, or freckle. Those fortunate enough to produce ample amounts of melanin discover they can walk around the block and get a tan. That doesn't mean either of these skin types should be exposing themselves to the sun. Whether you burn, tan or freckle, your body and your skin are reacting to the sun. A burn indicates overexposure and damage. A tan is your skin fighting the ultra-violet rays of the sun. Tanning quickly, tells you how hard your body is fighting.

Wear sunblock! Regardless of how much natural melanin you produce, the dangers of sunlight on healthy skin are widely known. Ultra-violet rays cause skin cancer, burns, lesions and other unhealthy skin conditions. Furthermore, exposure to the sun is the worst thing you can do for your appearance.

You might think a glowing tan looks wonderful, and in the moment, it does. But the sun is aging. It causes premature wrinkles, dark sun spots and age spots. If you have a few fine lines, a day of unprotected fun in the sun will turn them into deep creases. A few light freckles can become deep and fat age spots. The tan will fade in short time. The wrinkles and age spots will grow.

Therefore, if you really want healthy and beautiful looking skin, wear sunblock! For most of the world, the sun is out all year round, so protect your skin from the aging and damaging effects of those ultra-violet rays in winter, spring, summer and autumn. Your skin will thank you for it.
