Facebook and Twitter fans everywhere will want to take a look at some prospective designs for social networking trainers. The designs were released to coincide with the launch of a range of limited edition trainers by sports giant Adidas and the 35th anniversary of the Adidas Superstar.
Designer Gerry McKay has incorporated major features of the sites including strap lines and logos to the shoes. First up is the Facebook trainer, which has a strong and bright blue and white colour plan which is associated with the site. The Facebook logo is also printed on the back of the shoe and onto the tongue. "Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you" and "Making the world open and connected" are two separate slogans which are printed inside the shoe. The Twitter shoe is a more toned down version with a light blue colour plan and the famous Twitter bird logo instead of the text logo.
The designs are certainly unique but would the trainers be financially viable if they were ever manufactured? This is something that would need to be further researched by industry insiders but at this early stage they are not predicted to be created. Facebook and Twitter are a great way of keeping in touch with your friends but would you really want the brand in your life 24/7? They're more likely to be a one-off novelty purchase for a birthday or Christmas that will soon be discarded.
In this period of austerity consumers are basing their footwear decisions on function rather than style. This is evident in the selling power of trainers like the Reebok Easytone or the Adidas Predators that serve a specific function such as toning the muscles or enhancing grip during exercise. An exciting and unique design just won't cut it in the battle for sales.
It is yet to be seen what will come of these new designs, but it is unlikely that they will ever be put into development. Sales would be periodic with people splashing out on novelty gifts for birthdays and Christmases, but there would be no steady sales which would render the social media show commercially viable.
