Digital TV is coming to all of the UK, which means that almost everyone is going to be able to access digital TV through Freeview, or an aerial antenna.
Wireless broadband, high-definition TV, and local TV are also going to be available after the digital TV switch much more easily. What that means for people who have analog TV currently, however, is that they will need to switch over to digital TV before the switchover date in order to keep service.
What's so great about digital TV?
Digital TV is one of the better TV deals, not least because you've got a greater choice of TV channels to choose from, better interactivity, on-screen listings for choice, and the availability of subtitles you've got Audio or visual disabilities.
Digital TV also gives you the ability to add premium channels such as movies or sports channels, as well as telephony and broadband.
When will the switchover happen?
Between 2008 and 2012, the switchover will happen throughout the UK region by region. You should be receiving advance notice before the switch, so that you won't simply be left "in the dark" without any access to TV at all. If possible, make the switch as soon as you receive advance notice, to avoid any problems with receiving signal as the time for your switchover becomes closer.
Preparing for the switch
If you choose to keep your old analog TV, you'll need to make sure you're ready to receive digital signals. If your television is set up so that you can watch more than five channels, you probably already have digital TV. If not, you'll need to get a digital set top box so that your analog TV can receive digital signals. In addition to the television sets in your household, recorders as well such as video or DVD recorders will also need to be able to receive digital signals.
What if you can't afford to "go digital"?
The government has agreed to help those who can't afford to go digital. The BBC licence's fee is funding this, and if you're found to be eligible, you'll receive help with installation, equipment, and follow-up support, either for free or for a reduced fee. If you're 75 years of age or older, are registered as partially sighted or blind, or if you are currently receiving Social Security benefits, you may be eligible for assistance.
