When your computer is almost full of files it is going to start to become a lot more sluggish than ever before as it has to process through a lot more information. If you are storing a lot of files then you are best to consider purchasing an external hard drive, so you can move the files over to secure location while at the same time freeing up a lot of extra space on your computer.
When you are looking at your different options for a new drive you do need to spend just a bit of time thinking about a few main points. The first thing is of course the size of the drive you are looking for as they do come in various sizes.
The more space it has the higher the price so do shop around to see what you can actually afford but do look at how much it would cost you to get two smaller ones to match the storage space of the one larger drive. But apart from the storage space issue there are some other things that you really need to think about.
It is important that it is not too slow as the last thing you want is to have to really sit and wait as it does its thing. The figure you should be looking at is called the spindle speed, and this should be at least 7200rpm although the 5400rpm version is still good enough if your budget shall not stretch to this.
It is also very important to check out the seek time of the drive and you shall see this measured in milliseconds. As you might expect the lower this number the faster it is and do not get a drive that is above 10 milliseconds and ideally get one around 4 or 5.
The drive should be nice and quiet if not silent as it would start to hurt your ears if it made a noise when it was on. You should realize that the larger ones are going to have fans which are intended to keep their temperature down but just read the product details and keep an eye out for anything about the noise.
It is certainly a good idea to start reading some product reviews from people who have actually bought the drives. This is going to let you see what the consumers think and do read a lot of them as this is going to give you a far more accurate idea of how good or bad it is before you think about handing over any money.
