On the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico you'll find Uxmal. This is an exciting and lovely place in the country of Mexico. If you are going to be in this area, then putting this on your trip itinerary is a great idea.
It is an archaeological site that holds lots of history and is no doubt one of the most interesting places one can visit, not to mention old. This city was built around the time of 700AD, even though some believe that people lived there from approximately 800BC, which would be almost one thousand years before Uxmal was officially built.
Some have wondered why no settlement was created earlier in this area. Well, it appears that there was not a water source available in Uxmal, probably being the main reason.
There are many great reasons to take the time to visit Uxmal. All the attractions available are some of the main reasons. At 120 feet tall, you'll want to check out the Magicians Pyramid, which is far taller than any other buildings in the entire city. Enjoy getting to the top for the great view of Uxmal, and some great photos from up there.
Another great place to check out is the Nun's Quadrangle. This at one time was used for the military in the area. Check out the Governor's Palace as well, which is another exciting attraction you'll want to see.
If you want to really enjoy the city and all it offers, then consider spending a night there. This way you can enjoy the city in the evening and early morning without having to deal with the huge crowds. You'll only have to share the city with a few others that have a similar idea.
You'll need a permit if you plan on using a tripod in order to take any pictures here. Also, to use a video camera, you'll need to pay a small fee. Of course it can be worth the fee to get all these great sites and the beautiful area on camera.
It is important to be wearing the correct clothing when entering this area, as you will not be very comfortable if you are not. You should be wearing your most comfortable walking shoes that are suitable for climbing and are non-slip. The weather is normally very hot and humid throughout the year, so don't dress warmly. You'll wish you didn't!
If you want to visit other great sites in the area, check out the caves of Sayil, Kabah, Labna, Xlapak, and Grutas de Lotun. The Archaeological spot of Mayapan is another excellent spot to check out too.
Since the weather is so hot, you'll want to dress in light clothing and have sun screen with you. To avoid sunburn wearing a good hat is a great idea too. The warm weather does make it a great place for being active. Pouring rain wouldn't make it very fun for you. So, enjoy the sun and warmth as you enjoy going around and exploring this exciting destination.
If you plan to be around Cancun, you must take the time to go to Uxmal. You'll definitely miss out if you don't do this while you are there. This is an interesting and beautiful area to visit. It's an experience you may never have the chance at again so go ahead and go for it.
