Microsoft is well-known for their operating systems, so you'd expect its Windows 7 phone to be good too. One of the handsets running the new operating system is the HTC HD7 - how does it measure up to the competition in the crowded smartphone market? One area where it's good but not great is the camera, which is a bit hit and miss. The focusing is good, but it's unpredictable in terms of picture quality. The video app also has to be changed to your preferred settings every time you use it, which for some people might be a little annoying.
The main purpose of the HTC HD7 is its display. The screen measures 4.3 inches and has both good and bad points. The big screen makes it easier to do things with the phone, and it's easy to read websites even though the pixel density isn't that amazing. Text input is also easy but at times the screen feels a little too big and over inflated. Also, the screen's viewing angles aren't that great and, compared to other phones, the display simply isn't that high quality.
In terms of the software, the HTC HD7 is similar to other Windows 7 phones, which is to say that it's good. It also has some additions, including a weather app, Notes feature and a Photo Enhancer. The Notes app is interesting but has a word limit, so you can't write a huge amount on there. While the Photo Enhancer doesn't actually do a huge amount to enhance your photos, it does have a good range of features for fiddling with the look of photos, which is fun.
It's also an attractive looking phone, with great hardware. Two speakers frame the large display, and it's not shy about being an entertainment phone. There are volume controls and camera buttons also built into the casing. It's a nice device but not without its flaws. For example, the back of it is made from rather flimsy plastic and the rigidity of the phone is mainly provided by the display and a metallic band. It's perfectly sturdy and serviceable, but just feels a bit loose.
In conclusion, this is a decent phone with some excellent points, but it isn't perfect. The features that let it down include poor display contrast, lack of good viewing angles and the build quality, all of which are a bit distracting. Similarly, the sound quality from the speakers isn't great. However, the additional apps are a nice touch and the software is a good offering from Microsoft. The size of the phone and the big screen are other points in its favor, making it a good investment.
