Dogs are just like humans in many ways. They can develop their own personalities and behaviors which like a child, has to be positively influenced. This is what a dog training course is for.
There are many courses online as well as offline to choose from. However, no two programs are the same. Though most of them work, you have to explore what are the approaches they use in training your dog. There will advantages and drawbacks to each of those methods. Therefore, it is imperative that you think it through to figure out what's most suitable for you and your dog.
To give you an idea of these methods, here's 5 of the common ones:
1. Clicker Training: This method involves the use of a hand held device which makes a clicking sound when pressed. During training period, every time the dog is in good behavior, clicking sound is made along with some treats. This is a way to reinforce that good behavior. Gradually, the rewards will be taken but the clicking sound will still be there as a sort of way to tell him that he is behaving well.
2. Reward Training: Have you ever seen a show in the zoo featuring animals? Have you ever wondered why animals follow the commands of its trainers? Well, this is exactly the type of training it entails to get a dog or any animal behave in the way you want him to. If you give him a reward once you find his behavior very good, he'll want to do anything you say because he's in it for the treat.
3. Whistle Training: This method will require you to use an ultrasonic whistle. It is a device that will produce a whistle that can only be heard by dogs. This is an excellent way to prolong the dog's attention on you while you train him. The only disadvantage is that you yourself have to be trained first to do this.
4. Dog Whispering: You may probably have heard of trainers who are horse whisperers. This is much of the same method. And it's more of developing a close bond with the dog. There is still much debate if there is such a thing as a natural whisperer because this training can be quite intangible to the rest of us.
5. Collar Training: For this training you will need a collar on your dog. This will control your dog's movement loosely. This way, you dog will have no choice but follow on to wherever you direct his attention.
Most dog training courses employ a mix of the methods discussed above. Of course there are several other methods which can be used by dog training courses available. And most of these courses will claim some tricks to train your dog which are inherently their own. The right thing to do is to ask relevant questions when you can and choose a course that's suitable for your dog.
