The one video that we must start with is the famous, or infamous Numa Numa performed and uploaded by Gary Brolsma. Mr. Brolsma decided that it would be a good idea to video himself lip syncing to a song called Dragostea din tei by O-Zone, a pop group from Moldova. The video contains bad dance moves and terrible lip syncing, but extreme enthusiasm and humor. Currently it has gained 40 million hits after being uploaded over 4 years ago.
Some viral videos have become extremely popular purely because of the pain it causes to the viewers watching. The Star Wars Kid video is one of those. To the star of the video, a French-Canadian boy, the aim was simple, film yourself acting out scenes from the film Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace, and upload. The outcome was unbelievably hilarious and occasionally very uncomfortable to watch; Internet stardom ensued.
The Afro Ninja is another of those videos that plays on the embarrassment of others and contains an Audition from the actor/stuntman Mark Hicks. The video begins with Mark deciding that a back flip is in order, which he attempts, and unfortunately lands on his face. Mark realizes that he needs to proceed with the Audition without breaking the flow, stands up and tries to use his nun chucks; but he can't keep his balance and once again, meets the floor.
With well over 100 million views on YouTube, the most successful viral video on the Internet today has to be the Evolution of the Dance. Although still based on humor, this video, rather than laughing at the embarrassment of others, is filled with ingenuity and technical ability. The star, Judson Laipply, a stand up comedian and motivational speaker, performs a full 6 minutes of dance routines that evolve from the 1960s right up to modern times.
