The best man speech at a wedding is something that is easy to get wrong, and you have probably been to a wedding where this has happened. Anyone who has been given the task of being a best man for their friend or relation would not be alone if they were feeling very nervous about how they are going to be judged when the time comes to deliver the speech. Here are some of the most common best man speech mistakes that you will want to avoid.
- Avoid trying to imitate a stand up comedian if you are not a naturally funny person. It will be fine to put a few jokes in here and there, but you should not expect to have people falling over themselves laughing. It will be very embarrassing to deliver a speech that is full of jokes that nobody finds funny. But on the other hand, if you have experience with making people laugh then you should incorporate this talent into your speech. I have actually been to a few weddings where the best man has been trying to tell jokes which weren't funny and to be honest the whole thing was excruciatingly embarrassing.
- More is not better when it comes to best man speeches. If it goes on too long then you are likely to bore people; never go past 10 minutes unless you are somebody that normally charges a lot of money to speak. If you are going for an optimum time then try to stay around the five minute mark.
- Remember that the speech is meant to be about the bride and groom and not about you. Don't spend time during this speech airing any grievances or using the time to tell everyone all about you and what you have achieved.
- Unless you intentionally want to ruin the day, then you shouldn't say anything which could cause upset to anyone.
