For businesses in almost every sector, it seems competition is only ever getting more fierce and everyone is looking for more cost-effective ways of gaining a step ahead of their competitors. Whereas there are many advertising techniques that are effective, sometimes just by changing your company's telephone number you can increase the effectiveness of future marketing plans.

The great thing about toll free telephone numbers is that they are easier for the general public to remember than standard telephone numbers, which means that, coupled with the fact that all calls made to that number are free, you business is much more likely to receive calls from customers regarding your services or products.

Toll free numbers are very simple to set up and can come with such services as call screening, call forwarding, call recording, call conferencing, call answer services and many more. The main benefits of toll free numbers are that customers find them easier to remember and that customers are more likely to call.

If you want to subscribe to a toll free telephone number; you need to seek the services of a Responsible Organization, generally abbreviated to RespOrg. A RespOrg will be able to offer subscriptions to toll free numbers as they have access to the SMS/800 database. The SMS/800 database is a record of the status of all toll free numbers and can only be accessed by approved companies.

Some companies prefer to acquire vanity numbers in order to further improve the customers ability at remembering the contact details. A vanity number is a telephone number that uses digits in the number to spell out a product, service, company name or acronym, for example 1-800-CHEESES or 1-800-TALK2ME.

As a prevention against toll free number warehousing and hoarding, the FCC, or Federal Communications Commission help to regulate the industry in North America by establishing certain rules of conduct for RespOrgs and other organizations offering toll free number subscriptions. To clarify, hoarding relates to the purchase of numbers that a particular business is unlikely to use, usually for the purpose of selling on or number brokering; and warehousing relates to the act of companies reserving certain numbers without intended subscribers.

In summary, toll free number are popular with individuals and businesses alike due to the simplicity of setting up and the advantages of keeping in contact with family or customers. From a customers point of view, you would be much happier making a call to a company that is free than a call to a company that isn't!
